How to Know When Your Pool Needs Repair

Arizona is hard on pools. High heat, hard water, and UV exposure accelerate wear in ways that aren't always obvious until something fails. Here's what to watch for.

You're Losing More Water Than Usual
Act Soon

You're Losing More Water Than Usual

In Arizona, evaporation accounts for roughly ¼ inch of water loss per day in summer — more if it's windy. If you're losing more than that, or if you're losing water in winter when evaporation slows down, you likely have a leak.

The bucket test is the easiest way to check: fill a bucket to pool level, set it on a step, and compare the water loss after 24 hours. If the pool drops more than the bucket, it's a leak.

Leaks don't fix themselves. A slow leak can erode soil under the deck, shift the shell, and turn a $500 repair into a $5,000 one. Get it looked at.

Plan for It

The Plaster Feels Rough or Looks Chalky

Plaster etching is caused by low pH, high calcium hardness, or just age. It starts as a chalky white haze and progresses to a rough, sandpaper-like surface that tears swimsuits and scratches skin.

Minor etching can sometimes be addressed with an acid wash. More advanced deterioration — spalling, pitting, or exposed aggregate — means it's time to replaster.

Arizona's hard water accelerates this process. If your pool is more than 10–12 years old and has never been replastered, it's worth having someone take a look.

Your Equipment Is Acting Up
Don't Wait

Your Equipment Is Acting Up

Pumps, filters, and heaters are mechanical — they wear out. Common signs of trouble: the pump is loud or vibrating, the filter pressure is always high, the heater won't reach temperature, or the automation system is throwing errors.

A pump that's struggling to circulate water is a chemistry problem waiting to happen. Stagnant water in Arizona heat goes green fast.

Most equipment repairs are straightforward and inexpensive if you catch them early. Waiting until something fails completely usually means replacing the whole unit instead of just a part.
